The chimpanzees of Mahale (Tanzania): A unique and wild adventure

Trekking in one of the most remote National Parks in Tanzania

When we think of Tanzania, the typical image of a safari vehicle driving across the Serengeti plains and spotting lions, zebras, and giraffes comes to mind. But Tanzania is much more than that, especially in terms of wildlife.

Tanzania is a land of great discoveries and home to many species with fascinating histories. In addition, it is a place where unique primates live and where notable anthropological findings have been made.

On the shores of Lake Tanganyika, in a remote and unimaginable place for those who have never visited it, is the Mahale Mountains National Park. Together with the Katavi National Park, they are one of the least crowded parks in Tanzania due to their complex access. However, this makes your visit an authentic and unique adventure.

Mahale is home to one of the largest chimpanzee populations and one of two protected areas in Tanzania where chimpanzees live. Researchers and students of many different nationalities have studied Mahale’s chimpanzees for years. An excellent and fascinating opportunity is offered to enter this unique park to visit these primates.

Travelling to Tanzania and entering the wild nature of this place in search of chimpanzees is an adventure only possible for those who yearn to go further in their passage through Tanzania. Chimpanzees have been in danger of extinction for years, and unfortunately, their population continues to decrease over time. For all these reasons, going to observe them is not only an enjoyable and learning activity but also contributes to their conservation and the dissemination of the enormous efforts that field teams make daily to preserve and protect these extraordinary habitats and animals.

Few have been able to experience first-hand the adventure of travelling miles in search of these chimpanzees in the wild. Undoubtedly, this opportunity to observe them is a privilege worth appreciating.

Let yourself be surprised on this trip and immerse yourself in discovering the magic of these primates in their natural habitat; for sure, Mahale and his chimpanzees will not disappoint you.

Traveling with friends

Tanzania, Congo RDC, Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, Cameroun, South Sudan and many other African countries are part of our living experience in this marvellous continent.

Tanzania gave us, almost ten years ago, the opportunity to travel with our friends to visit vast areas of virgin nature, like Udzungwa, Ruaha, and also unique protected parks, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Lake Manyara (Reserve of the Biosphere), Lake Natron and the breathtaking Oldonio Lengai (the Mountain of Good).

We have been sleeping in the middle of nature, observing discretely and respecting the natural cycle of the animals; we have been able to hear the silence of the savannah and at night observe “the milky way” and the Southern Cross.

With the experience of more than 20 years of living and working in Africa, we want to show you how to say in swahili “hello” to someone older than you, “shikamo”, or how to order a cold drink “baridi sana” or say thank you “asante sana” to a population that appreciates greetings very much, and a smile from a foreigner. We will visit sites like the Isimila stone site, Kondoa paintings, Jeje museum in Iringa, or the crowded and colourful markets in Iringa, Dodoma or Arusha.

Now with Gong Rock safaris, we want you to be part of this marvellous adventure; with our team, you will be able to understand more about this part of the continent, why Tanzania is a peaceful country, how it is progressing, why they are protecting vast areas of their land, and protecting the large population of animals like lions (simba), leopards (duma), giraffes (twiga), zebras (pungamilia), rhinos (kifaro), and hundreds of other species that still transit free in vast areas like wildebeest (nyumbu) in the great migration.
